Surgical Instructions

It is important to us that our patients are informed during every step of their treatment so that they are well prepared and have the chance to ask questions. The following information is a starting point for researching your procedure and should assist in developing a list of questions to ask during your consultation.

 Before Dental Surgery or  Anesthesia

If you regularly take medications or suppliments, discuss them with the doctor to ensure that they are approved prior to surgery, the doctor may neeed to consult the prescribing physician or treating physician prior to a procedure.   Other than these simple considerations, there is nothing else you need to do to prepare for surgery. Discuss with the doctor any adverse effects that you may have had in a previous dental surgery or sensativities that you have had to prior medications.

 After Dental Surgery

After dental  surgery, it is recommended that you take at easy for 48-72 hours. Resting assists the healing process and limits after surgery bleeding. Drink plenty of fluids, but nothing too cold or too hot. You may need to apply an ice pack to your face in twenty-minute intervals for the 2 days following surgery. If you received upper implants, do not blow your nose for two weeks. It is common to experience slight bleeding for about two days after surgery and bruising can occurDepending on the severity of the surgery it is also probable that swelling can get worse up to 2-3 days after surgery, before it gets better. You will feel slightly uncomfortable the first few days following surgery. An increase in temperature of about 1 to 2 degrees is to be expected and is not a cause for concern. Finally, while you can eat when you are hungry, do not chew directly on the surgical site and stick to a soft diet for a few days if recommended. Pain medication and/or antibiotics may be prescribed following surgery depending on the situation. Please take as directed for best results.
